About the Author
M. S. Thambirajah, MBBS, FRCPsych (UK), is working in the UK as a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. This volume in the Language Learning Monograph series discusses social aspects of language testing, which the authors see as encompassing assessment of socially situated language use as well as the social consequences and societal impact of language tests. At the micro level, the authors explore socially oriented language test constructs and the difficulties they pose for language testing theory and practice. They consider these issues in relation to language assessment in oral proficiency interviews, and to the assessment of second language pragmatics. At the macro level, the authors consider societal concerns with fairness and equity in testing, examining first traditional ways of ensuring test fairness, including bias analysis, differential item functioning, and sensitivity review. They subsequently take a close look at the use and misuse of language tests in implementing educational policy and their gatekeeping function in maintaining boundaries and constructing identities. They argue that both the consequences of test use and the broader societal functions of tests need to be taken into account if we are fully to understand the social dimension of language assessment.

About the Author
Tim McNamara is Professor of Applied Linguistics at The University of Melbourne, where he gained his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, and where he helped establish the Language Testing Research Centre, of which he was subsequently Director. His research interests include language testing, language teaching, and language and identity. His recent work has focused on the relevance of contemporary social theory to concerns in language assessment and other areas of applied linguistics, including the role of language tests in the processing of the claims of asylum seekers and in citizenship procedures. He is the author of "Language Testing" (2000) and has published widely in applied linguistics journals.

Carsten Roever is a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the University of Melbourne. He has a Ph.D. in Second Language Studies from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. His main research interest is the assessment of second language pragmatics. Some of his favorite topics are acquisition of pragmatic knowledge, second language aptitude, web-based language testing, and research design. I finished You Are an Ironman seconds ago. This is a great read for athletes and non-athletes alike. The dedication of these "weekend warriors" is nothing short of impressive. As a nurse, and a YMCA member who takes an hour class here and there, I was in awe with Leanne. Working full-time, 12 hour days, while training for an event like IM takes a special kind of person.All of the athletes profiled are inspiring. Even if you have no desire to compete in a triathlon, let alone an Ironman, this book will most likely inspire you to get off the couch. I have exercised every day since starting this book. Not only is this book inspiring, it's well written and at times, suspenseful. I couldn't wait to get back to reading to find out what would happen next. I found myself rooting for these people! Inspiring and incredible is how I would describe these athletes and this book. Great read!

This book is just so awesome. For those of us who dream of doing an Ironmanthis book makes you realize that anyone can do an ironman..Well written! Enjoyed all of the personal stories.. Very inspiring

You don't need to be a triathlete to love this book. There are so many life lessons in here and the individuals Jacques writes about are every-day common people with a dream. What they go through, sacrifice and what these people learn are the things that we all can learn from.As a triathlete myself this book hits home for me. I understand the struggles that they all go through in preparing for what is the worlds toughest triathlon. But Ironman is more than a physical exercise. It's about mental toughness as well and what you do to prepare for that day, and what you will find on that day."There is no can't in Ironman."

I read this a few years ago and then re-read it recently while training for IMAZ. Motivational and fun to read... Everyone's experience is completely different so there was a lot I could and could not relate to. I paired this with "Becoming an Ironman" by Thom and found both were pretty good. This one can easily be read by someone who doesn't do triathlons and they would find it just as interesting (I think).. the other book would be a snooze to someone who isn't training or wanting to train for one.

Love this book! Six very different stories of people completing their first Ironman. Even if you aren't into Ironmans, it's a very inspirational story. This book will be passed around to all of my friends.

I wanted to enjoy this book. I enjoy pretty much all things Ironman. However, this feels like a collection of blog post reviews that are all jumbled in together. I have only made it about half way through and can't being myself to keep reading. It could've been written so much better.

I ordered this book because I am training for the Florida Ironman in Panama City, FL on November 2, 2013. In addition to training, I am seeking whatever means of encouragement I can find and this book about 6 average people training for their ironman fit the bill perfectly. I was inspirational and gave me hope that I, too, will cross that finish line and be "an ironman". I was humbled at the obstacles that these individuals had to overcome to achieve their dreams. The book is well written, totally engaging, and hard to put down once you get into the stories. Anyone interested in doing an ironman, or simply interested in how, and why, people do these crazy events, should read this book.

My sons beginning their triathlon endeavors inspired me to dip my own toes into this challenge,or challenges as this sport has several disciplines which led me to this book. I give it four stars only because the timing jumps around as to how the individuals pace their training and pacing. I would have maxed out the rating if it had been somewhat clearer in this chronology,because it is very inspiring to someone facing the internal individual goals of,well,life. And all that it entails. It is an excellent manual to one who wants to pursue this "sport" and provides wonderful insight of the aches and pains and the victorys and wins and triumphs,too.Excellent,excellent book.
