But as Zagzebski's argument shows, an individual's acceptance of authority in her community can be justified by principles that outsiders accept, and the particular beliefs justified by that authority are not immune to external critiques.

About the Author

Dorinda Neave is a senior lecturer in Art History at Capilano University, North Vancouver, Canada. Dorinda received a B.A. from Manchester University U.K. and a post-graduate certificate in Education from Keele University, U.K. before completing an M.A at the University of Victoria, Canada. She currently teaches courses in visual culture and Asian art at Capilano University. Her research interests include contemporary Japanese performance art and women in Japanese art as artists, patrons and subjects. Neave’s articles have been published in a variety of journals such as Art Journal and Woman’s Art Journal. She has traveled widely throughout Japan and in 2009 was a summer visiting scholar at Nichibunken (International Research Centre for Japanese Studies) in Kyoto.

Lara C. W. Blanchard is Luce Associate Professor of East Asian Art at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, New York, where she teaches courses in art history, Asian studies, and women’s studies. She received a B.A. from the College of William & Mary and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Her research interests focus on Chinese pictorial arts, especially of the Song through Ming dynasties (960-1644) and the contemporary era, and include women as artists and patrons, the construction of gender, text-image relationships, and theories of representation. Her articles have appeared in journals such as Ars Orientalis and Nan Nü: Men, Women and Gender in China. She has traveled throughout mainland China and studied Chinese art, language, and calligraphy in Taipei.

Marika Sardar is Associate Curator of Southern Asian and Islamic Art at The San Diego Museum of Art. Marika studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU where she completed a doctoral dissertation on the architecture of Golconda, a fortified city in the Deccan, India. She has also worked in the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and her research has embraced architecture, archaeology, painting, textiles, and trade. Publications include essays in several books about the Deccan and in the catalogue The Interwoven Globe: Worldwide Textile Trade, 1500–1800 (2013). She was co-editor of Sultans of the South: Arts of India’s Deccan Courts, 1323-1687 (2011).

A fictional version of the author serves as the narrator of Berlinski's uneven first novel, a thriller set in Thailand. Mischa Berlinski, a reporter who's moved to northern Thailand to be with his schoolteacher girlfriend, Rachel, hears from his friend Josh about the suicide of Martiya van der Leun, an American anthropologist, in a Thai jail, where she was serving 50 years for murder. As Mischa begins to investigate Martiya's life and supposed crimes, he becomes increasingly obsessed with the woman. The complications that arise have the potential to be riveting, but the chatty narrative voice takes too many irrelevant detours to build much suspense. Still, Berlinski, who has been a journalist in Thailand, vividly portrays the exotic setting and brings depth and nuance to his depictions of the Thais. Buried within the excess verbiage is a lean, interesting tale about, among many other things, the differences between modern and tribal cultures. (Mar.)

In this readable and clever debut, told almost entirely in backstory, Berlinski explores the problems inherent in trying to assume the perspective of another person or culture and the enduring conflict between faith and science. While he treats each perspective with genuine empathy, he refuses to take sides. Critics had a couple of complaints—a lagging secondary plot and a few descriptions with a textbook feel—but dismissed them as minor. They unanimously praised Berlinski’s wit, style, and intelligence in this atmospheric "novel that never fails to fascinate" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

It seems a woman anthropologist had been imprisoned in Thailand for murder and subsequently killed herself during her incarceration. The narrator takes up the story, assumes the challenge, and goes in search of the answers to two overriding questions: Whom did the woman murder and why? Berlinski is obviously fascinated by the history of twentieth-century anthropology and equally eager to share his knowledge of tribal customs in rural Thailand. The reader learns a great deal about fieldwork but significantly less about the effortless integration of fact into fiction. In this, Berlinski is somewhat clumsy. Brad Hooper

There is something familiar about Nordby's words - not because I have heard them before but because they feel so authentic and honest - it's as if a part of me is being awakened and I feel this is as much my story as it is Jacob's.
